Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a fire at a maisonette above a shop on White Horse Lane in Stepney Green.
Half of a four-roomed, split-level maisonette on the first and second floors of the building was damaged by fire. Four men left the building before the Brigade arrived and two men were taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.
The fire is believed to have been caused by the failure of a cell within a lithium-ion battery pack for an e-bike that was on charge.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "A resident was alerted to the fire when he was woken from his sleep by a loud popping noise and noticed flames coming from an e-bike on charge in their room.
"On arrival, crews were faced with a well-developed fire on the first floor of the maisonette and carried out a search of the property to confirm that no one was inside.
“You should always make sure you unplug your charger once it’s finished charging. Always follow manufacturers’ instructions when charging and we would advise not to leave it unattended or while people are asleep.
“We know that lithium-ion batteries are susceptible to failure if incorrect chargers are used, so it’s important to always use the correct charger for the product and buy an official one from a reputable seller.
“Batteries can also pose a risk if they have been damaged, so try to ensure they are not getting knocked around while in use or while being carried as spares as this can increase the chance of damage to cells. You should also not expose them to extremes of temperature.”
The Brigade was called at 0958 and the fire was under control by 1046. Fire crews from Whitechapel, Poplar, Shadwell and Bethnal Green fire stations attended the scene.
