Firefighters tackled further grass fires around London on Thursday evening.

As well as a significant blaze in Rainham, crews were also called to another three fires.

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters tackled a blaze on Wise Lane in West Drayton. Around 1.5 hectares of grassland was damaged by the fire. Crews were called at 1803 and the fire was under control by 1859. Fire crews from Heathrow, Kingston, Hammersmith and Fulham fire stations were at the scene.

Later, firefighters tackled a grass fire on Rainham Road in Rainham. Two hectares of grassland and shrubs were destroyed by the blaze. The Brigade was called at 1908 and the fire was under control by 2048. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Dagenham, Barking, Hornchurch and Romford fire stations were at the scene. The Brigade's 999 Control Officers took 19 calls to the blaze.

Then at 2102, firefighters were called to a fire on Woolwich Common in Woolwich. Around a hectare of grassland was alight. The fire was under control by 2217. Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters from East Greenwich, Greenwich, Eltham and Plumstead fire stations were at the scene. The Brigade's 999 Control Officers took 13 calls to the blaze.

Fortunately, no one was injured in any of the fires.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "There are still high temperatures forecast, especially for the coming days, and the ground remains dry.

"We’re urging people to take extra care and help us prevent fires on open land this summer.

“Make sure rubbish, especially glass, is safely thrown away and cigarettes are always properly disposed of. Grass will be tinder dry after periods of hot weather, so please don’t have barbecues in parks and public spaces."
