Firefighters tackled two grass fires in Feltham on Wednesday (10 August).

Firefighters were called to Cygnet Avenue at 1716. Two hectares of grass and shrubland were damaged by the blaze. The fire was under control by 1948. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Feltham, Heston and Twickenham fire stations attended the scene.

Later on, crews tackled another grass fire near Elmwood Avenue in Feltham. Half an acre of grass was damaged by fire. The Brigade was called at 1855 and the fire was under control by 2004. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Hillingdon, Surbiton and New Malden fire stations attended the scene.

The Brigade’s 999 Control Officers took 48 calls to the blazes. There were no reports of injuries at either.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “This summer has seen an unprecedented long, dry spell with high temperatures so the grass in London is tinderbox dry and the smallest of sparks can start a blaze which could cause devastation.

“We are asking Londoners to help us protect the city we all love by doing everything you can to prevent further grass fires. Please don’t barbecue in open spaces or balconies, throw your rubbish away safely and put your cigarettes out properly.”
