Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a house fire on Silver Lane in Croydon.
Firefighters tackled a fire at a detached house where half of the first floor and part of the loft were destroyed by fire. One man suffering from smoke inhalation and burns was taken to hospital.
The Brigade was called at 1659 and the fire was under control by 1850. Fire crews from Croydon, Mitcham, Woodside and other surrounding fire stations attended the scene.
The cause of the fire will be investigated.
