Firefighters are reminding people they need to get out and stay out if there's a fire in their home following a flat blaze on Jade Close in Dagenham.
Part of a ground floor flat was damaged by the fire. One man was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by London Ambulance Service crews and taken to hospital.
The Brigade's fire investigators believe the fire was accidental and involved a hairdryer.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "This fire was discovered when the occupant woke to a room full of smoke.
"They got out via a window but then re-entered the property to get their phone which they had left inside.
"If there is ever a fire in your home you should get out immediately, stay out and call 999. The sooner you call us, the sooner help will be on its way.
"It's also worth remembering that hairdryers, hair tongs, and straighteners can get extremely hot, so it’s very important to remember to switch them off and leave them to cool on a heat proof surface.
“There were also no working smoke alarms in the property. Smoke alarms give the earliest possible warning to fire, providing time to escape. You should have smoke alarms in every room where a fire could start, plus a heat alarm in the kitchen.”
The Brigade was called at 1056 and the fire was under control by 1141. Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters from Ilford and Dagenham fire stations attended the scene.
