Fire at flats - Walthamstow

Firefighters were called to a fire at a block of flats on Grange Road in Walthamstow yesterday evening.

Flats and balconies on the first, second and third floors were destroyed by the fire and the external fascia of the building was damaged. Firefighters rescued a man from a first floor flat via a ladder. A child suffering smoke inhalation was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews as a precaution. A further 40 residents evacuated the building.

The Brigade’s 999 Control Officers took 23 calls to the blaze. The Brigade was called at 1720 and the fire was under control by 1953. Five fire engines and around 35 firefighters from Hammersmith, West Norwood, Kingston, Sidcup and Heston fire stations were at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
