Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a fire at a block of flats on Meath Crescent in Bethnal Green.

A fifth-floor balcony was destroyed by the blaze and a small part of the flat was damaged. One man left the affected flat before the Brigade arrived. There were no reports of any injuries.

Station Commander Jerry Barker, who was at the scene, said: “The fire had started on the fifth-floor balcony of a 10-storey block of flats.

“Firefighters worked hard in very hot conditions to quickly bring the blaze under control and minimise damage to the affected flat.”

The Brigade’s 999 Control Officers took 16 calls to the blaze.

The Brigade was called at 1842 and the fire was under control by 1935. Fire crews from Bethnal Green, Holloway, Homerton, Poplar and Soho fire stations were at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
