Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a fire at a block of flats on Boundary Road in St John’s Wood.
Half of a flat on the second floor of the four storey block was destroyed by fire.
One woman was rescued by fire crews wearing breathing apparatus from an internal staircase. She was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service.
A second woman from a neighbouring flat was also rescued from the second floor via the internal staircase using a smoke hood. A third woman was rescued from a third flat on the second floor via the internal staircase using smoke hoods. Both women were rescued were treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service. A fourth woman and a toddler were rescued from a fourth flat on the second floor using a smoke hood. Both were suffering from smoke inhalation, London Ambulance service took the pair to hospital as a precaution. All rescues were carried out by fire crews wearing breathing apparatus.
Fire escape hoods can provide up to 15 minutes of protection from four of the main fire gases and filter toxic smoke.
The Brigade was called at 1914 and the incident was under control by 2048. Fire crews from West Hampstead, Paddington, Willesden, North Kensington, Kentish Town and Kensington fire stations were in attendance.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade's fire investigators and the Metropolitan Police Service.
