Grass fires across London

Firefighters tackled a number of grass fires around London at the weekend.

As well as significant blazes in Enfield, Hayes and Thamesmead, crews were also in attendance at several smaller grass fires.

Crews were called to Bell Lane in Enfield at 1453 on Saturday. An area of grass and shrubland around 300m x 50m was destroyed by the blaze 

The fire was under control by 1603. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Finchley, Southgate and Leytonstone fire stations were at the scene as well as colleagues from Essex Fire and Rescue Service.

A few hours later, crews were called to a grass fires on The Green in Hayes. 

One hectare of grass and shrubland behind a cricket club was destroyed by the fire.

The Brigade was called at 1721 and the fire was under control by 1910. Four fire engine and around 25 firefighters from Hillingdon, Hayes, Southall and Northolt fire stations were at the scene.

Later, firefighters attended a blaze involving grass, shrublands and peat on Capel Road in Manor Park. 

Around three hectares of land was destroyed by the fire. 

The Brigade was called at 1912 and the fire was under control by 2118. Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters from Leytonstone, Ilford, Leyton, Woodford, Poplar and Homerton fire stations were at the scene.

On Sunday, firefighters attended a grass fire on Gladiator Way in Hornchurch.

Around 50sqm of grass and shrubland was destroyed. The Brigade was called at 1924 and the fire was under control by 2055. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Barking, Hornchurch, Ilford and Hainault fire stations were at the scene.

Fortunately there were no injuries at any of the fires. The Brigade's 999 Control Officers took a total of 79 calls to them.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "There are still high temperatures forecast and the ground remains dry.

"We’re urging people to take extra care and help us prevent fires on open land this summer.

“Make sure rubbish, especially glass, is safely thrown away and cigarettes are always properly disposed of. Grass will be tinder dry after periods of hot weather, so please don’t have barbecues in parks and public spaces."
