Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a shed fire on Tolworth Rise North in New Malden.

Firefighters tackled a fire which destroyed six gardens after a bonfire got out of control. In total five sheds were destroyed by the fire, as well as trees, fences and garden swings.

Station Commander Paul Sadler, said: "Firefighters worked hard to get this fire under control to protect the nearby houses. Three houses were damaged by this fire, but it could have been a lot worse.

"In this hot weather we would urge people not to have bonfires, with this dry heat even the smallest spark could cause a significant fire due to the risk of them becoming out of control and spreading very quickly."

The Brigade Control Office received 30 calls about the fire. Two men were treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service crews for smoke inhalation.

The Brigade was called at 1411 and the fire was under control by 1629 . Fire crews from New Malden, Sutton, Kingston, Wimbledon and other surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire was an out of control bonfire.
