Firefighters have issued a cooking safety warning after a flat fire on Evering Road in Hackney.

Part of a four-roomed flat on the third floor of a residential block and a small part of a communal roof void were damaged by fire. A teenager was treated on scene.

The fire is believed to have been caused by paper accidentally igniting during cooking.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Fires are more likely to start in the kitchen than any other room in the home.

“It’s really important that you don’t leave cooking unattended and never leave fabrics, such as tea towels or paper, near to a cooker or a hob, because they can catch alight very easily, and flames can spread quickly.

“Please also take care with loose clothing. Don’t lean over the hob when cooking and roll up sleeves that might hang over the stove.

“There were a lot of possessions and clutter inside the house which made it challenging for firefighters. It can make fires spread much faster, especially when there are lots of flammable items such as newspapers or cardboard.”

The Brigade was called at 1438 and the fire was under control by 1559. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Stoke Newington, Islington, Tottenham and Bethnal Green fire stations attended the scene.
