Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters tackled a flat fire on Queensdale Crescent in Shepherd’s Bush.

The flat on the 12th floor was badly damaged by fire.

Station Commander David Bracewell, who was at the scene, said: "Firefighters dealt with a fire on the 12th floor of a tower block in W11. Three people from the affected flat left before the Brigade arrived. A number of other residents evacuated the building.

"Fire crews led six residents to safety via an internal staircase. Further residents who were not affected by fire, heat or smoke were advised to remain in their flats.

"In the early stages we used new technology called 9Eye that enabled a caller to send live stream videos of the incident straight into the Brigade’s 999 call centre.

"We've also used a 32m turntable ladder to put water on the outside of the building."

London Ambulance Service confirmed two patients were assessed at the scene and another was treated and taken to hospital.

The Brigade's 999 Control Officers took more than 30 calls to the incident. The Brigade was called at 0923 and the fire was under control by 1055. Fire crews from North Kensington, Hammersmith, Kensington, Paddington, Acton and surrounding fire stations were at the scene.

The fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by an e-bike's lithium-ion battery.

E-bike and e-scooter safety advice:

  • Always use the correct charger for the product and buy an official one from a reputable seller.
  • Batteries can get warm during their use and it is advisable to allow them to cool down before attempting to re-charge as they could be more susceptible to failure.
  • Batteries can also pose a risk if they have been damaged, so try to ensure they are not getting knocked around while in use or while being carried as spares as this can increase the chance of damage to cells.
