Firefighters have issued an electrical safety reminder after a house fire on Edwin Street in Canning Town.

Part of the ground floor of an end-of-terrace house was damaged by the fire. Five people left the property before the Brigade arrived. One man suffering smoke inhalation was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.

The Brigade's fire investigators believe the fire was accidental and involved a charging cable.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "The fire was discovered when one of the occupants woke to the smell of burning and noticed flames at the end of the bed.

"They tried to put the blaze out before evacuating the building so we would like to take this opportunity to remind people to never try and tackle a fire yourself.

"As soon as you become aware of a fire in your property you should get out, stay out and call 999.

"We also want to remind people of our electrical safety advice.

"From overloaded extension leads to cheap chargers, issues with electrical items are a common cause of fire in the home.

"You should always make sure you use the charger that came with your device and if you do need to replace it, choose a branded, genuine product from a supplier you can trust.

The Brigade was called at 0701 and the fire was under control by 0747. Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters from Plaistow, East Ham and Poplar fire stations were at the scene.

Firefighter safety tips for charging your devices:

• Always use the charger that came with your phone, tablet, e-cigarette or mobile device.
• If you need to buy a replacement, always choose a branded, genuine product from a supplier you can trust. There are lots of fakes out there, and it can be difficult to spot the difference.
• Avoid storing, using or charging batteries at very high or low temperatures.
• Protect batteries against being damaged – that's crushed, punctured or immersed in water.
• Don’t leave items continuously on charge after the charge cycle is complete – it's best not to leave your phone plugged in overnight for example.
• Never cover chargers or charging devices – that includes using your laptop power lead in bed.
• When you travel, avoid keeping all your items containing lithium ion batteries together, especially on a plane. Check with your flight carrier for additional information or advice.
• Don't overload your sockets – learn more about how much is too much on the fuses and power load page.
