Firefighters have issued bonfire safety guidance after a house fire on Raydons Road in Dagenham.

A decking area, a lean to and the external fascia of a ground floor rear extension were damaged by fire. Two fence panels were destroyed by the blaze. Two people left the building before the Brigade arrived. One woman was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a bonfire spreading out of control in a rear garden.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "We would urge people to consider if their bonfire is necessary and to take care if you’re burning waste at home.

“Always check your local authority’s advice on bonfires and follow our safety tips.

"Never use paraffin or petrol on your bonfire and make sure you build it far away from any buildings, sheds and fences and never leave it unattended.”

The Brigade was called at 2137 and the fire was under control by 2235. Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters from Dagenham and Barking fire stations attended the scene.

Bonfire safety tips

  • Build your bonfire clear of buildings, garden sheds, fences and hedges
  • Never use flammable liquids to start a bonfire and never burn dangerous items such as aerosol cans, paint tins, foam furniture or batteries
  • Don’t leave bonfires unattended. An adult should supervise it until it has burnt out. If it has to be left, damp it down with plenty of water
  • Check the area to make sure there's no wildlife or pets hiding nearby
