Firefighters rescued seven ducklings from the roof of a three-storey building on Seager Place in Deptford.
A duck had nested on the roof of the building and there was no way for the ducklings to get down. Firefighters used one of the Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders, put the ducklings into a pet carrier and safely brought them down.
Volunteer wildlife rescuer Andy Miller said: “I want to send a huge, heartfelt, thank you to London Fire Brigade.
“The ducklings are safe at home with me now, but will be going to The Swan Sanctuary where they will be cared for until they are able to be released into the wild.”
The work of a firefighter is varied and involves all sorts of different incidents, and they are ready, willing and able to assist distressed or injured animals.
The last thing firefighters want is for people to put themselves at risk rescuing an animal themselves – but the Brigade does encourage people to call the RSPCA in the first instance and they will assist if specialist equipment is required, as it was in this case.
The Brigade was called at 1428 and the incident was over for firefighters by 1520. Two fire engines from East Greenwich and Greenwich fire stations attended the scene.
