Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a fire in Baring Road, Grove Park.

Part of the ground floor and first floor of a semi detached house were damaged by fire. Part of some rear decking was also damaged, as well as part of a neighbouring property.

The fire is believed to have spread from rubbish being burned in a garden.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "We encourage people to avoid bonfires in gardens as they can quickly spread out of control.

"However, if you do choose to build a bonfire, check your local authority’s advice on bonfires and always build bonfires clear of buildings, sheds and fences and never leave it unattended."

The Brigade was called at 1550 and the fire was under control by 1650. Fire crews from Lee Green, Lewisham, Eltham and Forest Hill stations were at the scene.

Bonfire safety tips

  • Build your bonfire well clear of buildings, garden sheds, fences and hedges
  • Never use flammable liquids to start a bonfire and never burn dangerous items such as aerosol cans, paint tins, foam furniture or batteries
  • Always keep a bucket of water or a hosepipe nearby in case of fire
  • Don’t leave bonfires unattended. An adult should supervise it until it has burnt out. If it has to be left, damp it down with plenty of water
  • Check the area to make sure there's no wildlife or pets hiding nearby
