Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a fire on the roadside on Chatham Place in Hackney.
A 20-metre gas main on the roadside was alight. Properties in the surrounding area were evacuated as a precaution. There were no reports of any injuries .
The Brigade was called at 1822 and the fire was under control by 2217. Fire crews from Poplar, Leyton, Millwall, Leytonstone and Dowgate fire stations attended the scene.
The cause of the fire is believed to have been accidental.
