Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a maisonette fire on Southern Grove in Mile End.
Part of a split-level maisonette on the ground and first floor of a four-storey block was damaged by the fire. A man and woman were treated on scene for smoke inhalation and the man was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.
The Brigade was called at 1126 and the fire was under control by 1159. Fire crews from Bethnal Green, Poplar, Whitechapel, Shadwell, Millwall and Stratford fire stations were at the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
