Sadly, a teenage girl has died following a flat fire on Tollgate Road in Beckton.

The stairwell from the ground floor to the second floor of a residential block was destroyed by fire. Half of the second floor was also damaged by the blaze. Firefighters found the girl in a second-floor flat, she was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Five further people were taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.  

The Brigade’s Borough Commander for Newham, Richard Arnold said: “We would like to offer our condolences to the family and friends of the teenage girl who died at the scene of the fire yesterday evening.

“Throughout the day today [Friday, 7 April] our crews will be in the local community to offer support and advice to those affected by this fire. They will also be working alongside colleagues from the Met police.  

“This was a very tragic incident and our crews who attended the scene are receiving support from our counselling and trauma service.”

The Brigade was called at 1724 and the fire was under control by 1833. Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters from East Ham, Plaistow, Barking and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.
