Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters were called to flooding that had caused a sinkhole on St Mary Street in Woolwich.

A water main had burst causing a sinkhole measuring around seven metres deep. Firefighters evacuated 11 people from three properties and a 25-metre cordon was put in place. There were no reports of any injuries.

One of the Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders was used as an observation tower at the scene.

St Mary Street was closed between the junction of Sunbury Street and Kingsman Street whilst crews worked with partners to make the scene safe.

The Brigade was called at 2130 and the incident was over for firefighters at 0058. Firefighters from Plumstead and Greenwich Fire Stations attended the scene.
