Firefighters have shared their tips on using electric blankets safely after a house fire on Wonford Close in Kingston.

Part of the first floor of a detached house was damaged by fire. One woman left the building before the Brigade arrived and was assessed on scene by London Ambulance Service crews.

The fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by a faulty electric blanket.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "Electric blankets can be a good way to keep warm, but there are some simple tips to follow to keep safe if using them.

"They should always be stored flat, rolled up or loosely folded to prevent damaging the internal wiring. Always unplug them before you get into bed unless it has a thermostat control for safe all-night use.

"Never use an electric blanket if you have an air flow pressure relief mattress or use emollient creams and if your blanket gets wet, don’t use it and never switch it on to dry it.

"Do not buy second-hand electric blankets and check regularly for wear and tear and replace it at least every 10 years.

“The Brigade’s online Home Fire Safety Checker can guide you around your home and provide you with specific advice to reduce fire risks.”

The Brigade was called at 1408 and the fire was under control by 1537. Two fire engines and around 10 firefighters from Wimbledon and Twickenham fire stations attended the scene.
