Firefighters are issuing a candle safety reminder after a flat fire on Warner Road in Peckham.
A small part of a ground floor flat in a five-storey residential building was damaged by the fire.
One man suffering from smoke inhalation left the property before the Brigade arrived and was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.
The fire is believed to have been accidental caused by a tealight candle.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Candles, incense sticks and oil burners are one of the most common causes of fire. It’s really important that you never leave a candle unattended and keep them away from anything that can easily catch fire.
“You should also ensure they are in a heat-resistant holder and placed on a stable surface, so they won’t be knocked over.”
The Brigade was called at 1352 and the fire was under control by 1434. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from New Cross, Lambeth, Clapham and Old Kent Road fire stations attended the scene.
