Firefighters rescued Alfie the Dachshund after he became trapped under a summer house in the garden of a property on Sidewood Road in Eltham.

With the dog in distress and unable to escape, crews were able to dig Alfie out and safely return him to his owner.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Firefighters love animals and we are ready, willing and able to assist distressed or injured animals – the last thing we want is for people to put themselves at risk rescuing an animal themselves – but we do encourage people to call the RSPCA in the first instance and we will assist if our specialist equipment is required."

The Brigade was called at 0915 and the incident was over for firefighters by 0936. One fire engine from Eltham Fire Station attended the scene.
