Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters tackled a fire at a shop with flats above on Bethnal Green Road in Shoreditch.
The extraction system from the ground floor to the roof of the building was completely alight. Firefighters carried out a systematic search of the flats and adjoining properties. There are currently no reports of any injuries.
Bethnal Green Road is closed between Vallance Road and Brick Lane whilst crews make the scene safe.
The Brigade's 999 Control Officers have taken 23 calls to the blaze.
The Brigade was called at 1622 and the fire was under control by 1720. Fire crews from Bethnal Green, Shoreditch, Whitechapel, Dowgate and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
