Firefighters have issued a candle safety warning after a fire at a sheltered housing block on Malpas Road in Hackney.
A small part of the ground floor of a two-storey sheltered housing block was damaged by fire. One man was led to safety by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and was treated on scene by London Ambulance Service crews for smoke inhalation. A further 30 people left the building before the Brigade arrived.
The fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by a candle.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Candles, incense sticks and oil burners are one of the most common causes of fire. It’s really important that you never leave a candle unattended and keep them away from anything that can easily catch fire.
“You should also ensure they are put in a heat-resistant holder and placed on a stable surface, so they won’t be knocked over.”
The Brigade was called at 1417 and the fire was under control by 1441. Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters from Homerton, Bethnal Green and Shoreditch fire stations attended the scene.
