Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters tackled a fire at a block of flats on Dacres Road in Sydenham.

A 10th floor flat was destroyed by fire along with part of the building's roof. One man was rescued from a flat on the 10th floor via an internal staircase wearing a fire escape hood by crews in breathing apparatus. He was treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service crews.

The fire was producing a significant amount of smoke and local residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed.

Road closures were in place and people were asked to avoid the area.

The Brigade's Control Officers received more than 20 calls about the fire.

The Brigade was called at 1540 and the fire was brought under control by 1716. Crews from Forest Hill, Beckenham, West Norwood, Bromley and surrounding fire stations attended the scene. A 64 metre turntable ladder was in use as an observation tower, along with the Brigade's drone, providing the Incident Commander with a greater situational awareness of the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

  • Fire escape hoods provide members of the public with up to 15 minutes protection from four of the main fire gases (carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen chloride and acrolein) and can be worn by conscious or unconscious people. If more than 15 minutes protection is required then another hood can be given to each wearer. They do not provide oxygen but temporarily filter toxic smoke to make breathing easier.
