Firefighters have issued a reminder of the importance of smoke alarms after a house fire on Durham Road in Canning Town.
The first floor and roof of the two-storey terraced house were partially damaged by fire. One adult man and one adult woman left the property before the arrival of the Brigade and were taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service.
No working smoke alarms were found in the property. A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “This incident shows just how important it is to have working smoke alarms fitted on every level of your home.
“Smoke alarms give the earliest possible warning when a fire starts and we would urge everyone to make sure they have one fitted in every room where a fire can start except kitchens or bathrooms where heat alarms are more appropriate.”
The Brigade was first called at 0529 and the fire was under control 0715. Crews from Plaistow, Poplar, Stratford and East Ham fire stations attended the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
