Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters attended a fire on Larch Close, Lewisham.

The first and second floors, in an end of terrace house consisting of three floors, were heavily damaged by fire. Five adults and one child left the property before the Brigade arrived.

The Brigade received the first of eight calls reporting the fire at 1420, and crews had the incident under control by 1632. Firefighters from Greenwich, Dockhead, New Cross and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

The fire is believed to have been accidental, caused by a candle.

Candle top tips

  • Keep them in heat-resistant holders placed on a stable surface
  • Don't put them close to anything that can catch fire, such as curtains, papers, furniture, and clothes
  • To avoid accidents keep candles and all naked flames (including matches and lighters) out of the reach of children and pets
