Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters responded to a basement fire on Mile End Road.
The fire was located in the basement of a shop with flats above. A section of electrical cabling was damaged by the fire. Crews evacuated residents from the flats above as a precaution. There are no reports of any injuries.
The Brigade was called about the fire at 2315, and crews had the incident under control by 0141. Firefighters from Bethnal Green, Poplar, Whitechapel and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
