Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters tackled a fire at an open-air storage facility and workshop on Ripple Road in Barking this morning.

A workshop was completely destroyed by fire and a small part of the fascia on an adjacent warehouse. There were no reports of injuries.

A quick thinking passer-by noticed smoke and flames coming from the property and dialled 999. This was the first of six calls made to the Brigade's Control Officers.

The Brigade was called at 0406 and Control Officers mobilised crews from Barking, Dagenham, East Ham and Wennington fire stations to the scene. The fire was brought under control by 0652.

The cause of the fire is accidental and due to an electrical fault in the workshop.
