Twenty fire engines and around 125 firefighters have been tackling a fire at a warehouse on New Road in Rainham.

A two-storey warehouse divided up into several industrial units was destroyed by the fire. There have been no reports of any injuries.

The fire produced a significant amount of smoke and local residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed while the incident was ongoing. A scientific advisor was also mobilised to monitor air quality in the area.

One of the Brigade's 32-metre turntable ladders was used at the scene as a water tower to help fight the fire from above. The Brigade's Drone Team were deployed to offer the Incident Commander an aerial view of the fire. 

Control Officers received the first of 27 calls at 1021 and mobilised crews from Wennington, Dagenham, Barking and surrounding fire stations to the scene. The fire was brought under control by 1410.

Firefighters have remained on the scene throughout the night extinguishing hotspots and this will continue today (1 January).

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
