Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a fire at a hair salon with flats above it on Camberwell Church Street.

Half of the salon on the ground floor was destroyed by fire. One person in the basement of the building evacuated the property before the Brigade arrived. A passer-by who saw the fire called the Brigade. Thankfully, no injuries are reported.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "This incident is a timely reminder about the importance of having working smoke alarms throughout a property. In this case, the salon was not equipped with smoke alarms.

“Homes need multiple smoke alarms or you won't be properly covered. As a minimum, you should have smoke alarms on every floor of your home - in the hallways and the rooms you use the most plus a heat alarm in the bathroom and kitchen."

The Brigade was called at 2323 and the fire was under control by 0026. Fire crews from Peckham, New Cross, Old Kent Road and Brixton fire stations were in attendance.

The fire has been recorded as accidental, it's believed the cause was due to faulty mains electrical wiring igniting decorative wooden cladding within the salon.
