Firefighters have issued a reminder of their fireworks safety advice following a fire at a block of flats on Hester Road in Battersea.

A small part of a seventh floor flat was damaged by the fire. Two people left the building before the Brigade arrived. There were no reports of any injuries.

The fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by a stray flare.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “We encourage people to attend organised fireworks displays instead of using fireworks privately, but if you do choose to use fireworks, make sure you have enough space, buy them from a reputable, licensed seller and always look for a CE mark to make sure they’re safe.

"Never drink alcohol and set off fireworks and don’t throw fireworks or return to a firework once it has been lit.

“Remember that fireworks are explosives, and as such should be treated with respect and only used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and the Firework Code.”

One of the Brigade's 32-metre turntable ladders was used as an observation tower to provide visibility of the fire from above.

The Brigade was called at 2258 and the incident was over for firefighters at 0134. Five fire engines and around 30 firefighters from Chelsea, Fulham, Clapham and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.
