Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters tackled a hotel fire on Connaught Road in Silvertown.

A hotel room on the fifth floor was destroyed by fire. One adult man suffering smoke inhalation was lead to safety from the fifth floor by firefighters before being taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service. Approximately 150 further people left the building before the arrival of the Brigade.

Station Commander Matt Sale, who was at the scene, said: “Crews worked hard to bring the fire under control.

"Road closures were in place while firefighters were on scene and the area was heavily congested. People were urged to avoid the area where possible."

The Brigade was called at 1010 and the fire was under control by 1159. Crews from Plaistow, East Ham, Poplar and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire has been recorded as undetermined.
