Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters tackled a car fire on Eastern Avenue in Ilford.

One car at the rear of a flat on Eastern Avenue was destroyed by fire. The rear of the flat and a metal fire escape were partially damaged by fire. Firefighters led four people to safety from a first floor window using a three-piece extension ladder. One additional person left the flat before the arrival of the Brigade. One man suffered burns to his hand.

The Brigade's 999 Control Officers took over 50 calls to this incident. The Brigade was first called at 1737 and the fire was under control by 1923. Crews from Hainault, Leytonstone, Woodford and Leyton fire stations attended the scene.

The fire is believed to be accidental and caused by a ruptured fuel line in a car.
