Firefighters have issued a warning about the dangers of fires caused by reflected sunlight after a house fire on Parma Crescent in Wandsworth.
A converted loft in the roof space of the two-storey house was mostly destroyed by fire. The Brigade's 32 metre turntable ladder was deployed to the scene to fight the fire from above.
One woman left the property before the arrival of the Brigade. She was treated on-scene by London Ambulance Service for minor burns and smoke inhalation before being taken to hospital. Firefighters rescued one dog and two cats from a neighbouring property as a precaution.
Station Commander Thomas Sharp, who was in attendance at the incident, said: "There is quite a bit of smoke in the area, so local residents are advised to keep their windows and doors closed."
The fire is believed to be accidental and caused by sunlight reflecting off of a makeup mirror.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “These sorts of fires are not as rare as you would think. They can happen all year around, but as we head into summer and the sun gets stronger, it’s really important that reflective items such as mirrors, crystals and glass ornaments are kept out of direct sunlight.”
The Brigade was called at 1324 and the fire was under control by 1507. Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters from Wandsworth, Chelsea, Tooting, Clapham and Fulham fire stations attended the scene.
