Firefighters are reminding smokers to dispose of smoking materials safely after a fire at a scaffolding yard on New Road in Rainham.

A mixture of timber and scaffold boards were destroyed by fire. There were no reports of any injuries.

The fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by the unsafe disposal of smoking materials.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “This incident serves as a timely reminder for smokers to ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it.

“If you don’t, you risk causing a fire which could not only destroy properties, but also cost you your life.”

The Brigade was called at 0207 and the fire was under control by 0424. Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters from Wennington, Dagenham, Barking, Hornchurch and East Ham fire stations attended the scene.

Smoking safety top tips

  • It's safer to smoke outside, but make sure cigarettes are put right out and disposed of properly.
  • Never smoke in bed, and avoid smoking on armchairs and sofas – especially if you think you might fall asleep.
  • Use proper ashtrays, which can’t tip over and stub cigarettes out properly
