Firefighters have issued a reminder of their smoking safety advice following a fire at a mid-terraced house on Lea Bridge Road in Leyton.
Part of a three roomed flat on the ground floor was damaged by the fire. Two people left the three storey building before the Brigade's arrival.
The fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by the unsafe disposal of smoking materials.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "This incident shows just how vital it is to have working smoke alarms.
"It's also a timely reminder for smokers to ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it.
“If you don’t, you risk causing a fire which could not only destroy your home, but also cost you your life.”
The Brigade was called at 0649 and the incident was over for firefighters at 0726. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Walthamstow, Leyton and Leytonstone fire stations attended the scene.
