Firefighters are issuing a safety reminder about smoking following a fire at a block of flats on Cunningham Avenue in Silvertown.
Around three metres of external flashing and fascia on a roof garden as part of a duplex flat on the eighth and nineth floors of the building were destroyed by fire.
One of the Brigade's 32-metre turntable ladders was used at the scene as an observation tower.
The fire is being treated as accidental and is believed to have been caused by the unsafe disposal of smoking materials.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "If you smoke it is vitally important you stub it right out, preferably in an ashtray.
"Always ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it. If you don’t, you risk causing a fire as you don’t know what it may land on which could potentially start a fire."
The Brigade was called at 1540 and the incident was over for firefighters at 1714. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Plaistow, Poplar, East Ham and Bethnal Green fire stations attended the scene.
