Our people

Our firefighters have been kitted out with brand new uniforms to wear when they are out and about in the capital advising Londoners about fire safety.

The new trousers, t-shirts, short sleeved shirts, jackets and sweatshirts, replace the old uniform which is over 20 years old. The jackets and shirts come complete with our crest and logo to make our firefighters easily identifiable to members of the public.

Huge delivery programme

Kitting out around 5,000 firefighters was a huge undertaking and a major delivery programme saw our103 fire stations supplied with:

  • 5,000 jackets and sweatshirts
  • 15,000 pairs of trousers
  • 20,000 shirts
  • 25,000 t-shirts

Third Officer Dave Brown said: "As well as responding to emergencies, a really important part of our job is working with London's communities and talking to people about how they can prevent fires from starting in the first place.

"It's really important that the public know what our staff look like when they visit their homes to give fire safety advice and fit smoke alarms. The new work wear uniform not only gives our firefighters a really professional look, it makes them easily identifiable."

Rigorous testing

As well as being worn when they are out doing fire prevention work, the new uniform is also worn under their protective fire gear when our crews are responding to fires and other emergencies.

To ensure it was up to standard, the new kit underwent rigorous testing to assess its performance under the protective equipment worn by our firefighters. This included training in real fire conditions and working with ladders and breathing apparatus.

Check identification

All our firefighters carry identification cards and if you are ever unsure whether a firefighter is not who they say they are ask to see their identification and call the number on it to confirm their identity.
