London Fire Brigade representatives gathered with the Fire Brigades Union and the Deputy Mayor for Fire and Resilience Fiona Twycross to mark a very solemn day in London Fire Brigade’s history, when Firefighters Terry Hunt and David Stokoe from Silvertown fire station, died in the line of duty fighting a major blaze.
Dom Ellis, Assistant Commissioner London Fire Brigade, said:
“Firefighters Terry Hunt and David Stokoe remain in our thoughts, as do their families.
“On that day, Terry and David were joined by their colleagues from nearby stations - Poplar, Bow and Stratford - to attend a fire at Brunswick House, a warehouse on Gillender Street. As the fire rapidly developed, 40 fire engines were needed, and it took more than six hours to bring the fire under control.
“Following the incident, fundamental improvements were made to the way we trained and equipped firefighters for such incidents.”
