In July, we hosted a four-day art project for young people in the Notting Hill area. We were lucky enough to work with GLUE - a social enterprise which aims to build a community of young people who are socially and artistically empowered.
The aim of the project was to create artwork to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Windrush, which would be turned into a huge banner, to be displayed on the front of North Kensington Fire Station at Carnival.
To inspire the artwork, we partnered with the Pepper Pot Centre, a local organisation which has been supporting elders in the local Caribbean and African community since 1981. They generously shared their experiences of moving to London as part of the Windrush generation, which gave the children a starting point for their artwork. Alongside creating their artwork, the children got stuck into rap, dance and Zumba workshops – keeping their creative juices flowing!
You can see the banner and the art exhibition, which tells the story of this project and how the banner was made, at our open day (details below) on the 27th August.
On Sunday 27th August, North Kensington Fire Station is hosting a Carnival open day – and you’re invited!
The doors will be open between 2pm and 4pm, when we’ll be letting in a maximum of 50 people at a time, because of limited space.
Expect the Carnival atmosphere on the street to spill over into our appliance bay. There’ll be face painting for the children, a chance to look around the fire engines and our life-saving equipment, and enjoy the occasion with our firefighters. You’ll also be able to check out our art exhibition up close.
Between 28th August and 3rd September you can find the exhibition in the foyer of North Kensington Fire Station. Ring the enquiry bell on our Faraday Road door between 9am and 5pm, and as long as we’re not out at an incident, one of our firefighters can show you the exhibition.
We want to work with you, to make sure your views are heard and considered when we make plans for the future of London Fire Brigade and how we serve and protect London.
