Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne, who is coordinating the Brigade's operational response today, said: "We're wishing everyone taking part in today's London Marathon, including our own staff, the best of luck.

"We have firefighters strategically located across the event footprint ready to respond to any incidents and support participants and event organisers. I'd like to thank all officers and staff helping to support today's event, including our volunteers who are situated at Mile 21 ready to hand out water bottles and show their support to all of the runners.

"We're expecting a fine sunny day across London. If you're enjoying watching the marathon at home, please be careful if you are having a BBQ, making sure it is held away from flammable materials like fences and sheds. Please do also not have a BBQ on a balcony.

"If you're out enjoying the weather in London's parks and open spaces, please do not have a disposable BBQ to avoid the risk of a fire in the open. Smoking materials should also be disposed of properly and please take your rubbish home with you if you can't dispose of it to reduce the risk of grass fires."
