Flooding can have a greater impact on you depending on where you live. You can sign up to free flood warnings that are delivered by phone, email or text.
You can check to see if you are at risk of flooding in your area.
What to do when floods are forecast
If flooding is forecast in your area there are steps you can take to be prepared:
- Save the Floodline number to your phone. You will need to call them to report flooding in your area, or for advice if your home is flooded. Call Floodline on 0345 988 1188.
- Create a list of important contact details such as your insurance and utility companies and insurance providers.

Make sure you know how to turn of your gas, water and electrical supplies in an emergency

Look out for your neighbours. If you have vulnerable neighbours, make sure they know what they need to do in an emergency.
- Put an emergency grab bag together. This should include items that you would need if you had to leave your home. This could include medication, important documents e.g. (insurance documents), clothes and toiletries
Is there anything I can do to stop my property from flooding?
There are steps you can take to try and limit the damage to your property.
- Use flood barriers to divert the water away from your home and to prevent it entering. You can buy flood prevention devices online or from a hardware store.
- Consider what items you may want to move to a higher level to protect them from potential flooding.
- Flood water can come in through toilets, so be prepared to sandbag your bathroom doors or block your toilet.
