#ChargeSafe:

E-bike conversion kits could be putting you at risk

Conversion kits allow people to add an electric motor to their bicycle. Not all of them are sold with a battery or charger. The battery or charger then must be purchased separately, sometimes from a different seller increasing the risk of using an incompatible charger and of a fire starting.

The risk

Batteries purchased online might not necessarily adhere to UK safety regulations are more likely to fail and cause a fire. Buying batteries second hand means you may be buying a battery that is already damaged and a fire risk.

DIY installations can also lead to damage of the kit, increasing the chances of battery failure and the likelihood of a fire.

London Fire Brigade Advice

London Fire Brigade advises people to buy from a reputable seller and to not buy second hand.

We also advise that people do not attempt to modify or tamper with the battery, motor or charger, and to always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Always charge the battery with the correct charger.

If you plan to convert your bicycle to an e-bike, get a professional to carry out the conversion.
